Believed to have been written in 1877 as a minstrel song, Days of ‘49 was collected in the 1930s by folklorist John Lomax. Numerous musicians over the years have recorded and performed this song, including Spider John Koerner and Bob Dylan. It describes the Gold Rush of 1849 and the men who tried to strike gold. Most of them failed.
